BRIAN BULL BECOMES LEAD INTERVIEWER FOR PUBLIC RADIO ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
Brian Bull, reporter, producer and interim News Director at KLCC in Eugene, Oregon, is named Lead Interviewer and consultant for The Public Radio Oral History Project. Project Director Ken Mills says, “Brian’s inquisitive mind and solid reporting and interview skills are essential to getting started.
“The recent deaths of Jim Russell and Wally Smith underscore the urgent need for oral history interviews to begin.”
The project intends to interview forty (40) of the living pioneers and builders of the public radio system in America during the next year. The effort is now in an interim phase. Four oral history interviews will be conducted this winter.
Once the interviews are completed the audio files will be housed at the University of Maryland Libraries, the repository for the project. Nevada Public Radio in Las Vegas is the fiduciary and fiscal agent for The Public Radio Oral History Project. Mills says the project is currently seeking financial support from CPB and private donors.
“I’m truly honored and excited to be part of this venture,” said Bull. “To interview some of public broadcasting’s most influential founders, innovators, and legends, then make these recordings available for posterity’s sake is a tremendous opportunity. I hope this provides an essential archive for everyone who celebrates the public media industry.”
Bull joined KLCC 89.7 FM as a reporter/producer in 2016. Currently he is a co-interim News Director at the station.
Prior to KLCC, Bull was a reporter, producer and afternoon host at Ideastream (WCPN-FM) in Cleveland; Assistant News Director at Wisconsin Public Radio and News Director at South Dakota Public Broadcasting. He served as President/Chair of Vision Maker Media (formerly Native American Public Telecommunications) from 2004 to 2014.
Bull has received numerous awards including 19 National and/or Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio-Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), the Associated Press, and the Public Media Journalists Association (formerly known as PRNDI).
The Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) named Bull the Best Radio Reporter in 2001. He is an enrolled member of the Nez Perce Tribe.
Bull is a graduate of NPR’s Diversity Initiative and serves as a recurring mentor for NPR’s Next Generation Project. He earned a BA in Psychology from Macalester College and a Master’s Degree in American Online Journalism from New York University.
